Granted, the setting is the 50's, but the acting by Leo DiCaprio seemed plastic for much of the movie. There were intense scenes, where his magic was evident, but not enough for me.
Maybe it was just the theme...Couple falls in love, marries, moves to suburbia, husband's in a job he hates for years, and they no longer have that light in their lives anymore. So, they decide to move to Paris, a place the husband once felt alive in. Before they have a chance to fulfill their dream, husband gets a promotion and wife is pregnant again. He wants to stay, she wants to go, and they are back at each other's throats.
Kate Winslet is one of my favorites. Always has been, and she is wonderful, as usual in this role. But, I didn't care about these characters, and when tragedy strikes, I felt nothing.
There are a number of fine movies out right now, including Slumdog Millionaire and Frost/Nixon. This is not in their league. |
