Baz Luhrmann crafted a style in his first 3 films known as the Red Curtain Trilogy. The director has said that he is taking his movies in a 'new' direction. I was afraid this might mean an absence of his unique style. But while Luhrmann has taken his story telling to new heights and definitely in a new direction, his distinctive brand of filmmaking is as present as ever.
"Australia's" strength is being billed as in the two leads, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. While they both give extraordinary performances and deserve much praise for their portrayals, it is the young boy, Brandon Walters, who has never acted (!) that impresses the most and brings the most heart to the film. He could be a definite contender for an award if the Academy has an award for such a beautiful performance.
The story is exhilarating. It has its humor and it has its tragedy, classic Luhrmann style. It is set in a heightened state of reality and yet speaks much truth. Get lost in this amazing film.
My favorite film of the year WAS the Dark Knight. To me, it was a story of a world of evil and the ability and inability of those to fight it. But this film most definitely takes the spot of my favorite film, not only this year, but in a long long time. It is all about Hope, Hope, Hope. And I believe that is the true message we need to hear in certain and uncertain times. This is one to be remembered. |
