A Real Harmony Fan

Given that I am an avid film enthusiast, and a big fan of Harmony Korine's (having actually seen all of his films as well as read his novel "A Crackup At the Race Riots, and own his cd "SSAB Songs", unlike the rest of the reviewers) I feel that I have great basis for comparison on this movie.
'Mister Lonely' is the first film that Harmony has come out with in about 8 years, and is in many ways very similar, yet very far from his previous attempts. While Korine is certainly a unique filmmaker, 'Mister Lonely' seems more accessible than his other films. It does not lack the narrative cohesion that made 'Gummo' most known for, and also does not take such liberties with camera work and editing as does 'Julien Donkey-Boy.' 'Mister Lonely' takes a more disciplined approach, from a more mature Korine.
The film is clearly the most "theatrical" of his arsenal in many ways. First of all, at least on the surface, it appears to be completely scripted. |
