I loved every minute of this movie. It's a bubbly modern fairy tale given immense charm and depth by the two stars--Frances McDormand and Amy Adams. They are both terrific. Adams in even more engaging than she was in the otherwise average "Enchanted." And Frances McDormand creates a strong character I really cared about.

I think the script and direction are pretty good. There are places where characters have change. The writers did the work to make those changes happen. They weren't lazy about it. I believed it all. If you haven't seen it here's a little tip: Watch to see when Miss Pettigrew eats. That's a cute little through-line.

Background Note: This movie is based on a a novel written by Winifred Watson in 1938. Watson was fairly popular and respected before World War II. A movie was almost made of "Miss Pettigrew..." starring Billie Burke (the good witch from "The Wizard of Oz") but Pearl Harbor came and Hollywood dropped it. In 1943, her home was bombed and she moved in with her mother-in-law. She stopped writing because she didn't have any privacy. "Miss Pettigrew..." went out of print, but was rediscovered just before Wason died in 2002 at the age of 95. She got to enjoy a mild revival of her work, but not this happy movie.
