We saw this movie with a group of people. The themes of a difficult life confronted by a real-life faith, all based on a true story, intrigued us.
I thought parts of the movie were inspiring. The reality of how divorce wreaks havok on a person, on their children and on their faith rang true to me as a person with people I have known who have experienced it. The people in my group who have been directly impacted by that were deeply moved. The questions of faith and wrestling with difficulty in life were particularly well handled.
The things I didn't like were the less-than-expected production values: the pacing of the story was too drawn out (waayyy too many "face full of pondering" shots, he seemed to go into his office and get started at work 12 times, 3 seconds of coffee pouring, etc.); at times the story seemed unrealistic ***SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT***: the unconvincing obsession with a 30-years ago romance as the key moving emotional push in the main character's life; that same girl's response when he looks her up 30 years later seemed very stiff and disjointed- she was neither surprised to see him, nor did she have anything to say (she made Stallone look wordy) to him really when he resolves things with her.
With the acting not great, the dialogue stilted, the pacing poor, I had no option but to point to the director.
Take away the poor direction though and the drawn-out pacing, the content of the movie was good and gave us all something to talk about afterward. For a movie thought that puts together similar thought-provoking themes with much better production values, go get "Facing the Giants". |
