Great story that's uncomfortable to watch

Now, 24 hours after watching this documentary, my brain is still churning as I try to put the pieces together.
In fact, it's almost as though I don't want to put the pieces together and accept the truth. You so want to root for the family as the movie unfolds, especially as the media and public pressure begins to mount.
However, in the final 20-30 minutes of the movie, you start to see a whole new side of Marla's parents and inner circle. The scene in which the art buyers are sold on the "Ocean" piece could be the most telling part of this whole documentary.
I have to imagine that few directors are put in such tough positions as this one was. With all things considered, I think he tried to tell things as fairly as possible. You could really sense his struggle in telling this story. |
