Not since Braveheart has such a noble character been explored. Who among us would remain true to a higher value given these obstacles, disappointments and pressures? Certainly not I, sad to say, but it was inspiring to watch someone else do it and then triumph in the end. This is not for action fans or even most martial arts fans, but it is for people who like good writing, story and insights into the human soul. The best part for me is seeing just about every kind of human character and foible portrayed but only one of them is actually virtuous and unwavering. The main character is the one to watch for sure, but in the end Mamet is praising the Martial Art itself for giving people who aspire to be more, a code, and set of values to live by that make life more important.
