You should not come in looking for a story. The plot is inconsequential. "Synecdoche, NY" is about meaning.
Our lead is looking for the meaning of life, love, the world, and his play. And you, as the viewer, should be trying to find the "meaning" of this film.
If you go in looking for something that just mind-boggles, like those found in Charles Kaufman's other screenplays, you will not find it. Kaufman is working on a different level here. He is not just here to Wow! and dazzle you with his usual narrative gymnastics, this time he wants you to think and dig.
So if you are willing to take a journey, bring a shovel or you'll end up like those D and F viewers. And if you are like me, chances are you will love it, but it takes a bit of searching, patience, and abstract thought. |
