Despite occasional moments of brilliance, good acting and strong visuals, this "daring intellectual film" suffers from... lack of originality. A director trying to recreate his life in a play, crumbling sets, hark back to Fellini's "8-1/2". Watching a loved one through a glass in a peepshow is lifted from Wim Wenders "Paris, Texas". Some dialog makes it sound like a Woody Allen's movie. Burning houses remind us of "Barton Fink". Director Charlie Kaufman would have been better off with another screenwriter. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman should stick with what he does best — writing brilliant scripts. |
