In America today there are a couple of major problems. One of those problems is the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about. The elephant is racism.

There are 2 sets of truths about racism in America. The first is that it exists. How can you say that you ask? The times depicted in the movie have passed you say. Blacks don't have "Jim Crow" anymore.

That is certainly true, but the following facts are truths about racism in it's modern form:
1) People of color - given equal credit and income characteristics - are denied loans for homes at a greater rate than white Americans.
2) Last year - in a study reported in USA Today - It was determined that an identical resume -with a black sounding name substituted - received something like 50% fewer calls for interviews.
3) When seeking to buy a new car it has been shown
that African American women can expect to pay on average $1,000 more for the same new car vs. a white male. African American males can expect to pay more than $500 more for that same new vehicle.

Now these are the fundamental economic bases for most homes. If it is harder to get work, harder to buy a home, and more expensive to buy a car, i submit that being African American does impose a burden.

At the same time this movie shows another truth. This is - burden or not - the fundamental approach that must be taken to conquer racism.

The movie demonstrates truths African Americans seem to have forgotten:
1) We must have unity to succeed and overcome the burden.
2) We must dedicate ourselves to excellence in all that we do to win.
3) We must work harder to achieve the same goal, but that simply makes it all the sweeter.

This movie is inspiring. In a country where my little boy - a 12 year old African American is told by his white female teacher "You are just an average boy", this movie shows a way out.

That average `12 year old is scoring above the average Junior on PSATs through hard work, and the fact that he is NOT just an average boy.

That was racism talking.

Until America is willing to admit the existence of this problem, it will never be resolved.

If you've got the courage to face the truth, go see this movie.
