Just viewed the movie and I am glad I didn't read some of these reviews before going. What is it that we as Blacks want? I read a review saying that there should be no more movies made about the "First" accomplishment of our Black predessors. What a ridiculous thing to say. Is that what I should say to my 21 year old niece who is about to become the "first" of her great-grandmother's 20-something great-grands to graduate from college? If we don't constantly remind our youth from which they came and how far we still have yet to go, who will?! That is one of the reason our youth is so desolate because they don't hear enough about the struggles and they don't identify with that era.
I saw congrats to Denzel, Forrest and Oprah for reminding us yet again where we come from and how far we have yet to go!!
Great movie and a must see for our youth. I would wager to say that the same people who are complaining about this movie can't wait to go see "First Sunday" which seems to simply continue the stereotypes that this very movie is trying to discourage.
When are we going to stop putting ourselves down and celebrate our accomplishment no matter when they occurred! |
