Many Christians believe that their religion is a strong advocate of tolerance and peaceful coexistance. This movie serves as a reminder that this is not always the acase.
Importantly, the movie is not anti-Christian yet undoubtedly many people will interpret it that way. Instead, it shows a side to Christianity that most Christians either willfully ignore or have never stopped to recognize. It shows how the Christian religion has often been highjacked to justify war and violence. "Jesus is not a warmonger," the movie says, yet a religion based upon a peaceful man is also responsible for fueling centuries of anti-semitism and violence. Naturally, Christianity is not the first religion nor the only religion to become violent, but this movie examines the Jewish-Christian conflict through the centuries as a proxy for many types of religious hatred.
The movie also warns about the blurring lines between church and state and the danger that poses. It points out that evangelical Christians are actively attempting to Christianize cadets at Air Force Acadamey. Further to the point, it suggests that the current war in Iraq has a definitive religious overtone and warns that religious fueled wars usually have catastrophic outcomes.
This is a fantastic documentary that raises important issues. It provides a simple message. How can a world filled with religious intolerance expect to survive. Until all religions (not just Christianity) recognize mistakes and flaws within themselves and embrace tolerance of those who think differently, the world will remain on edge. |
