A Movie That Exceeded the Hype
by JS (movies profile)
Sep 10, 2008
Seeing "the best indie movie in years" set me up to be disappointed. But I was wrong; it's GREAT. Just as "Swingers" was an early work with budding actors hinting at real star power [Vince Vaughn, Ron Livingston, Jon Favr. . . Favr. . . -- well, you know -- HIM], "Midnight Kiss" is an amazing introduction to Scoot McNairy, Sara Simmonds, and Brian McGuire. You'll hear more from them.
Hearing Scoot McNairy's voice begin the film, I was wary -- I thought I'd could never like the protagonist, and that he would be a quirky, but charming loser. Not far off the mark, but the film develops him into a real person, and one I recognize and want to follow for two hours of my life.
Sara Simmonds is very attractive, and is also quickly established as a "type" -- the bitchy, whacky hot girl. Not far off the mark, but the film then develops that character into a real person that you want to follow.
The characters are familiar, yet fully-realized and NOT predictable. They grow, and just when you think you know which cliche the flick will follow, it takes you to a real place where people behave in real ways -- not movie ways.
The actors show amazing range, andf the low budget and production values never intrude on their believable performances.
A WINNER! |
