Ok, first off let me say that until I saw this film the entire concept of Holocaust fiction left me cold. Why go to fiction when the reality is so intense? Well, this movie changed my mind. One of those things only the Brits could have pulled off. I was mesmerized from the beginning and I hardly felt the passage of time until the gut-wrenching conclusion. I had to have a couple of beers to settle down afterwards. It certainly isn't a typical film about the Holocaust, and its oblique approach apparently has not registered with many "professional" critics. I have been studying the Holocaust for 20 years and have seen most films and documentaries on the subject and read more than 200 books. I hated "Life is Beautiful." "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is one of the most moving films I have ever seen because the characters were all very real, and they managed to convery incredible horror without graphic violence. The acting was superb, and the attention to detail was first rate. They made a few mistakes with the prisoner's uniforms, but very minor. Go see it at once! The theater was packed, but after the first half hour the audience hardly moved. |
