What a powerful movie!

I found it very difficult to watch this movie. The opening quote: "Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows." This sets the tone for the entire movie. Just this concept alone made me cringe and nod in agreement as the main character, a young boy whose father is a Nazi concentration camp official, viewed his place in the world when he moves next to the camp, which he believes is a farm. For example, once he's told that jews "live" there to perform special work, he surmises that these jews (he's never heard of them before) must be the hardest workers. The ensuing relationship he has with a boy that lives in the camp is overwhelmingly warm and terrifying. My girlfriend, who very rarely cries during a movie, bawled her eyes out. I however am usually the first to shed a tear, and the message and delivery of this movie was so powerful and shocking that I didn't even have time to cry. I will have to see this movie again when it's released on DVD to get closure. I was somber for a few hours afterwards because it really got me thinking. This movie is a must see. |
