I was a young man in a upscaled private boarding school during this period of our history.I followed Ernie Davis's career when he was playing. I never even dreamed that he and black athletes had to endure the prejudices that they did.
This movie may not be the greatest sports' movie ever produced, but it sure ranks high in exposing the many reasons America has to wake up to the ways we treat our fellow man. We have come a long way in the realm of human relationships toward minorities and women but we still have a long way to go.
The story shows how ridiculous college and professional sports can become when people turn the game into a religion. The players become the martyrs thrown to the lions of "state college pride". Years later these young heroes of the gridiron suffer the aches and pains of a brutal game that entertains thousands every Saturday afternoon in the Fall. The best a player may gain is a college degree and a lot of memories while the institution of higher learning counts their millions made due to their sacrifice.
A beautiful movie about a very talented man who literally gave his life for the game. |
