As part of a deal, my wife agreed to come with me. She hates football, in fact all sports movies. To my surprise, she loved it. She thought it was fantastic.
Even as a fan who knew the story, I was not expecting it to be so great. Surprise!
My biggest concern was how they would handle the Jim Brown legacy. How could they tout Ernie Davis as the best without trashing Jim Brown?
Brown's performance at Syracuse was inhuman. Just one example. In 1957 he scored 43 points. Not bad for a season? Except Jim did that in just one game. And we are talking here about Division 1 college football, not Little League.
The movie script was brilliant. Brown's memory was not tarnished. In fact, an obvious sequel to this wonderful Ernie Davis story would be one about Brown.
Clean, good , wholesome. Hollywood can still still do it better - when Hollywood aims high.
Dennis Quid and Rob Brown should be duly rewarded for their magnificent performances. |
