Totally inaccurate rep. of Turkish people
by Mary (movies profile)
Oct 5, 2008
Allthought the film was well constructed and had a captivating storyline, it was a totally inaccurate representation of turkish people. The prosititution, the lust of men, alcohol, pious men on the metro against yeters ways, stealing, boys snifing glue, boys killing germans, the husband killings, were many of the things in this film which do not give a accurate view in to the country.
the scenes in istanbul are places no tourist would ever be anyways, and they are virtually non existent. Istanbul is a beautiful city ( really) and it is as safe or safer than most american cities. only rarely are you ever pickpocketed and that is about it. Also the turkish people they show in the film are predominently dark skinned and from the east ( in fact i think all of them were) i want to make sure that it is under stood that this is a group of people even i have never seen in my life this large ( i have lived in istanbul for 2 years).
other than this the film gives a good idea of the restrictions the turkish government has a on free education , free religion , free dom of speech, and ect. It also gives a very small view of how the turkish people have been brainwashed by the government, in the scene in which the protesters are arrested and every body is clapping mindlessly at they're arrest. the turkish government wants to have complete control. for years they have had that and have been stuffing there pockets. every now and then when there is a protest, it is portrayed by the gov. as a act of crime and an insult to the country. this movie follows the path of aytel who is one of these protesters who has to run away because of the evil gov. however the movies is not really about politics or immigration stories and it give nothing more than a peek into turkish or german life. so it is not very valuable unless you are looking for long movie and have 2 hours to sit in a dark room contemplating whether or not you like the film your self.
All in all, if there is no other better film, i would suggest watching it , but with caution because of the stereotypes on turkish people. |
