Serious disappointment from a huge Saw fan

It's very difficult to go into specifics as to why I'm disappointed without giving away spoilers, so I'll try to generalize why I didn't like it.
Like all Saw movies, this one was written in such a way to make the viewer believe certain things. Then, like all other Saw movies, you're given a couple surprise twists at the end. This completely bombed for me in this movie. Here's the main reason why. In the first 3 movies, if you watch them again, the plot makes total sense, even if you know the surprise ending. In Saw 4, when you know the surprises, the plot MAKES NO SENSE! When you are misled the way the writers want, the characters behave appropriately. When you get the surprises at the end, then you realize that what the characters know is different. With this knowledge, the characters in the movie know things that they couldn't possibly know and do things that they would never do.
In a nutshell, this is my biggest problem with this movie. The writers got very lazy, cheated and cut some corners, and then didn't feel the need to add any explanations that make sense. Saw 1 makes sense when you know that the dead body on the floor is the real killer. Saw 2 still makes sense when you know that Amanda is working with Jigsaw. Saw 3 makes perfect sense when you know that the whole movie was Amanda's test and not Jeff or Lynn's. Saw 4 doesn't make sense when you know the ending. Without going into specifics, the surprise I'm talking about is tied to the very last scene. |
