I was a bit disappointed with this movie, especially when compared to others Simon Pegg has done, including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Run Fatboy Run.
It was then no surprise for me to lear that, unlike the first three, Pegg had no input on this one as a writer. I think I prefer his talents there. There's nothing wrong with Pegg as an actor, but i don't think he brings anything special to the screen, especially in movies where he's not acting out his own writing.
It's not a terribly original story. Foreigner lands opportunity of a lifetime, comes stateside. Repeated inroads to success are mrely met with attitude and he is treated like an outcast, except for the lone attractive female coworker he has befriended. He eventually gives up on his ideals, sells out, and becomes happy with money and success and materialism.
He eventually wises up, ditches the fancy job, and gets the girl. I think the most bothersome point is the mention by his father that Sidney actually possesses a masters in philosophy. Are we really expected to believe that a man who went the lengths necessary to get a masters in philosophy is really that vapid, materialistic, and otherwise incredibly pedestrian and crude?
Stick to the slapstick, Simon. |
