From what my husband and I can tell, most of those writing the bad reviews didn't follow the cartoon in the '80s and are obviously part of the "Shrek" generation. This movie remained true to some of the basics of the cartoon. The only real issue we had was with Jason Lee's horrible rendition of Dave yelling "ALVIIIIIN." His acting was also not that great but that could be because we are used to him being dry and funny on "My Name is Earl." So this is where the B- comes in. The rest of it was entertaining and those of us that love and know music, will appreciate some of the other songs from this error in the movie.
So they are judging things according to those standards. How many folks actually saw some of the older cartoons made in the late 50's? Most folks didn't know that they are that old.
This movie probably would be more entertaining to those of us that remember being 5-10 yrs old watching this that actually collected the albums, toys and watched it every Saturday morning! We will appreciate it more and how it seemed to stay true to form with the little details. Children that are in that same age bracket now may enjoy this movie more, but the "Shrek" generation who have been introduced to more adult humor, will not believe it is cool enough. |
