This looked intriguing from the trailer. I was surprised by how good it actually was. It introduces you to the aliens first, and follows them more than the humans. While it does tend to lean towards the Humans are the evil aggressors in the universe, the movie does a good job of a) making it a desperate move and b) a move not supported by most of the humans. Bad for the military? Well, some one has to be the bad guy.
The intro is not long and before you know it the action kicks in and seldom slows up. I only saw the 2D, but i can imagine how incredible the 3D version is. The story is pretty close to being typical, but unlike most kids movies, this one didnt pull any of its punches. While never graphic enough to disturb most children, they didnt hesitate to let people die because...well...that's what happens when a ship blows up.
Visuals were a tale of two areas. As with most CG (and all Kid's CG)the humans were very doughy and unrealistic. The aliens were a bit still, but beyond that the backdrops and ships and environments were stunning. Again, i wish i had seen in in 3D.
The actors were nothing great, but at the same time it wasn't James Garner doing a voice. Instead it was the alien leader as a person.
Where this movie really stands out though, is the direction. The director did a very good job of towing the stereotypes you would expect from a movie like this, but never goes over it so far that it becomes boring and predictable. Indeed, it is in the ending fight that this movie really makes its mark(to avoid spoiling it i will leave it at that).
I walked out thoroughly impressed with it and my kids(boy 5 and girls 6,7,9, and 11)all enjoyed it. It was very Star Wars-esque, but it doesn't leave the girls out of the mold either. This movie will not get the credit it deserved. |
