I wanna be like 'The Bourne Identity'

I'm a Hitman video game fan, so naturally I expected the movie to reflected the dark, edgy tone of the game. Not so dark or edgy here, but I was happy that the movie did not totally ruin the essence of the game. It was even heartening that it could laugh at itself with a gamely cameo of the actual Hitman. (Don't blink or you'll miss it.)
This movie borrowed too much from the elements that made "The Bourne Identity" such a hit. The girl, the pacing, the fighting styles, even the pulsing soundtrack was virtually Bourne. This actually helped the film, but again as a fan of the video game, I had hoped that Agent 47 would somehow carve a niche for himself among all the game-to-movie heroes out there.
The story was not bad with some interesting plot twists, but I really wanted to see more of the trademark Hitman kills. They did not explore enough of the strategy and planning before each hit that defines the video game. For example, why would they show 47 using his poison syringe when he clearly had the drop on the bad guys with his Ballers - doesn't ring true Hitman. And the "Godfather" homage during that scene? 47 can be more original than that.
I give my nod to Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47. From his all-business gait and the proportion of his bald head, I feel he can carry this franchise. Let's just hope that they are more true to the spririt of the hit game in the future. I mean, come on! 47 did not even garrote anyone with his fiber wire! |
