Don't watch if you get motion-sick

I came into this movie with pretty low expectations since Vietnamese cinema isn't exactly flourishing yet. From that perspective, I was very pleased with the performance of the actors and would definitely like to watch them in their future work. The young girl is great at portraying innocence and cynicism simultaneously. Cat Ly was very good at portraying a woman with a tender, albeit scarred, heart. The zoo keeper was also perfect for the role of someone beaten down by life but still hoping for more.
The storyline is very basic and could probably be done in a lot less time. My only two complaints are the shoddy camera work and the terrible subtitle translations. The closeups and the shaky documentary-style visual made me extremely nauseous and made it difficult to enjoy the movie. I would save this one for a rental where you can stand back and see it on a smaller screen if you are anything like me. Also, even though my Vietnamese is elementary school level, I felt a lot of the humor and emotion was lost in translation in the subtitles. I wish someone would translate some of the poetry and comedy in the dialogue into the English subtitles. |
