The film opens with a beautiful narrative that brought a tear to my ear. Then the film quickly put me on "red alert" within the first few minutes, because the 14 year old lead character smoked dope in the school bathroom and flipped a prophylactic into her grandmother's lap. From my perspective, the film dug itself a deep hole to climb out of. The movie did redeem itself, partly by giving us a story of ethical persistence, and partly by opening the door for a low-key conversation with my daughter about drugs and alcohol. |
