What I like best about this movie is its subtly and complexity. (I really hope I spelled "subtly" correctly.) The story goes kind of where I expected it to go, but not quite. The relationships between the characters are not one dimensional. The characters themselves are not simple. Juno (Ellen Page) is smart, funny, kind, strong, naive, charming, self-centered, expressive, and repressed all at the same time. I thought Michael Cera was great. He was awkard and had lots of emotion just under the surface. Both of them seemed like real people and real teenagers. I really liked the relationship between Juno and her stepmother. They argue and have resentments, but they love each other and when Juno needs her, there is no question that her stepmother is there for her.
After I saw the preview, I wondered if this movie was going to make light of teen pregnancy. It does not. In fact, I think "Juno" does a great job of remaining nonjudgmental but realistic about the issue. It is not played for laughs or taken lightly. It is absolutely clear that Juno is not ready to be a parent. There's no debate about that in the movie. It's not condemning of her and the boy for having had sex, but makes it clear that having unprotected sex has consequences. I appreciated that. |
