The Feel Bad Movie of the Year!

It's the rare film that can make you feel worse after seeing it, at least for me. "The Mist" is one of those films.
Based on the Stephen King novella, the plot is simple. A dense fog descends on a town and the people who were caught in the grocery when it happens, bicker, plot and evangelize when they realize there are monsters in the fog. (Interesting that during the course of the film, no one ever utters the word fog. Mist is drizzle. Fog is thick. Could it be that they know about that other film? Hmmm.)
Stereotypes, passing themselves off as characters, quarrel about what strategy to take and turn on each other. Cults develop. The cult of science want to go one way. The religious cult wants to go all Old Testament. Others decide on the easy exit. People are the real monsters in this film.
The ending, which I won't give away, is depressing. I'm not one that advocates that every film needs to have a happy ending. But walking out of The Mist, I really wanted a mood elevator. This is not the film to get you in the holiday spirit. That is, unless you're celebrating La Dia de los muertos. |
