I went into this film expecting a typical monster flick. I liked the original "The Fog" by John Carpenter, so I was excited to see this one. Having read a few Stephen King novels I should have known that this would be much more.
While the movie teems with mindless, nasty critters hell bent on killing everything moving, the real terror in this film comes from the characters themselves. A study on fear and what we become when faced with our own survival, I found myself squirming in my seat and chewing my nails down to the quick. The director effectively builds suspense throughout the film until it reaches a crescendo, at which point one of the most disturbing scenes in the movie comes when the characters turn against one another. When people in the theatre CHEER at the death of specific characters, you know they're hooked into the suspense.
Sadly, the least effective parts of the movie are most of the CGI sequences. The monsters themselves look cheesy, and they are actually scarier when you can barely make them out in the mist. The film, in my opinion, would have carried even more dread if the monsters had been relatively unseen.
The ending is absolutely one of the most horrible scenes ever filmed. I will ALWAYS remember it, and have actually been trying to put it out my head since I left the theater. This is one of those films where I was restraining myself from yelling at the screen, and I'm a stoic 38 year old male. See this film, but be ready to try and quickly forget it. |
