I went to this movie expecting to see a serious, action-packed apocalypse movie. What I got was an extremely entertaining and dumb but fun movie that is very much in the same vein of GRINDHOUSE and SHOOT 'EM UP. I was completely shocked too but this turned into a GRINDHOUSE movie.
I can already say that a lot of people, critics included, are going to absolutely hate this movie and call it pointless crap, a piece of junk, etc. A lot of people hated GRINDHOUSE and SHOOT 'EM UP also. This is simply the type of movie that DOOMSDAY is, a dumb but extremely fun and over-the-top movie.
I just saw this with a friend (after seeing FUNNY GAMES (see my review if you want to know more about that one)) and we absolutely loved this! We were cracking up and cheering the whole way through the movie! It's just an awesome time! This movie has basically everything: Action, Scares, A lot of Gore, Gun Fights, Cannibalism, and even Knights (I kid you not!).
There were two things that somehat didn't work for me in this movie though. One was that there is basically a set from LORD OF RINGS complete with medieval guys and knights, and two was that there wasn't enough of the cannibals (who you see a lot of in the trailer). Other than that, this is an extremely enjoyable movie to see in theaters if turn your brain off for two hours.
Overall, if you go in expecting a serious apocalyptic movie then you may be severely disappointed. If you love movies like GRINDHOUSE and SHOOT 'EM UP then you are going to love this. Recommended for an awesome and fun movie!
