The movie 'Once' is rated R. It has no nudity, no sex, no violence, no drug use, no gratuitous swearing. Instead, its two main characters, who live with their parents, deal with heartache by performing their own songs, as she helps him produce a CD. For those who can forgive a handful of swear words, the film is like a Robert Frost poem: edited with a hand as undeniable as a New England winter.
In the film, there is a motorcycle ride to the coast. But the motorcycle was borrowed from Dad without his knowledge, and she must return by noon or risks losing her housecleaning job. The films message is that ride. The world imposes its unyielding constraints. It is in the cramped spaces between them that music, and friendship, must be forged or silence wins. It's sad that, out of the filmmakers respect for the way Dubliners actually speak, most American teenagers will never hear that message. I think they need to hear it. |
