Walking toward laughs, not awards...

Let me tell you right now that John C. Reilly has FINALLY arrived. Sure, he had his shining moments in previous films, but it is incredibly refreshing that he is finally being noticed as an actor that is able to hold his own. Even more so, the fact that his first film "on his own" comes in the form of a comedy assures us that his ability to generate laughs is something he'll do willingly, regardless if it is in a movie that spoofs another film.

Regarding Walk Hard itself, a lot of people will either do one of two things: one) they will associate it with the already growing batch of annoying films that mock other movies (Epic Movie, Date Movie, etc.) and as a result, ignore it or two) everyone will be seeing that Johnny Depp movie or that other flick about treasure. Although, if you do choose to see this movie over those two blockbusters, then let me just say that Walk Hard is NOT like the other movies in the increasingly crowded "spoof genre." It actually holds its own as a comedy that maintains the balance between stupid jokes all the way to jokes that inflict gut-busting laughter that one thought wasn't possible anymore. Don't get me wrong, there are some parts that are slightly stupid and absolutely pointless, but it'd be a safe bet that because of Reilly, Walk Hard works and it does so in a way that isn't fresh, but is still able to draw you in without forcing you to roll your eyes multiple times.

Although not the best comedy of the year, Walk Hard is a surprisingly fun comedy that could easily be lumped into the same league as Hot Fuzz, Superbad, and Knocked Up in terms of hilarious moments. If you're looking for a movie that isn't depressingly bleak like Sweeney Todd or filled to the brim with horrible dialogue like National Treasure, Walk Hard might be worth your time and your money.
