Although I was at first upset to find the movie a complete rip-off of the book, it does take a different approach to the young adults quite serious book series.
-----------------
The graphics and special effects are the same as those from other newer movies, and I found them to be qutie impressive, even if overall they were a little disorganized and gave you a headache.
-----------------
Many of the movies now a days are that of a young boy and occasionally girl, usually in their early teens, who get thrown into some kind of perilous adventure of some kind. They get powers, or magic, or some kind of way to battle, and everything gets even more unoriginal from there. Plus, the movie, I believe, was rated PG (I think?), and there were some parts that would've given my little brother, who's ten, NIGHTMARES. That one scene with the policmen had an opposite effect then "fighting against darkness." Young children are told over and over by their parents to trust policemen. They're the good guys, the heroes. Well, in the movie, the two policmen take Will, a young boy, into a dark room, and then practically start to kill him by turning into monsters and crows that symbloize the darkness that all children are afraid of. Way to go for feeling safe and secure with the local policemen. I'm fourteen, and I was practically terrified, (but also excited) with that scene. This movie takes the thoery that all humans are afraid of the dark because they are afraid of the unknown, and turn it against Will, who could symbolize the young generation.
------------------
The movie also ends a little too abrupt, with Will's long lost FOURTEEN year old twin came back with him, and not even a single family member even seems to question how or what the heck happened! Well Tom comes back, it turns out it isn't the end of the world, and everything's just fine and dandy, right as rain. What in the world is that all about?! The books, which are well-written and therfore well-known, or rather, the one main book: The Dark is Rising, is actually completely different. And although I belive the movie is worth seeing, the book remians the greater story told. READ THE BOOK(S) FIRST!!!!!!!!!
-------------------
You'll also find some major differences between the book and the movie. Some such that annoyed me were that there was no long lost twin in the book, in the movie there was no "Walker," who I believe played a key part, and the Will from the movie had major contrasts from that of the original character in the book. Plus, in the movie, Maggie ended too quickly, and at the end, it seemed that everything was all right, even though the Dark should be attacking, or "rising," again soon. Overall, even though I admire the movie greatly, it had its faults, and also its missing and changed parts, but it was still quite a fun watch. |
