First!- This was not made in Hollywood by Yankees for the 'tastes' of the average American audience. If you like Indie/Art House/ European cinema- then You'll appreciate what "In Bruges" is experimenting with. This coming from an American film goer.
It's basically 1/2 Dark Comedy and 1/2 twisted morality tale. It has lush scenery, wicked politically incorrect humor, quirky & seductive romance and actual real emotional issues. It's not supposed to be 'spoon-fed' like alot of American dark comedys. If you like the irony of "The Office" or "Snatch" or the bizarre plot twists of something "Magnolia" When it's a comedy it's funny and when it's a Drama it works- Just Not simultainiously. It will take you for a ride!
Colin Ferrell and Brenden Gleeson turn two ordinary thugs into thought provoking characters with purpose and conscience- no one is what they seem at first "In Bruges". Clemence Poesy might as well be the 'French' Kate Beckinsale as she lights up each scene and smokes it like her character Chloe smokes her cigaretts, like a raw untamed film siren always ready for a close-up. Ralph Finnes plays a man of 'principals' and while he doesn't appear till the final act he makes up for lost time proving he's still got a few tricks to scare even Voldemort.
Yes, there is a dwarf and he steals many a scene as an American actor slumming it in a Euro-Art film that is, yes shooting "In Bruges" (but don't hold it against him!).
You want a new experience and something fresh and full of Euro-Flavor, go rent or check out "In Bruges". It's like a dark twisted fairy tale dream...especially when they light the buildings up at night. |
