Wes Anderson’s new film, The Darjeeling Limited, follows the journey of three brothers as they travel across India on a train in search of a spiritual awakening. The brothers, played by Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzman, start their quest as self-centered individuals, leading Schwartzman’s character, Jack, to ponder aloud whether the three of them would ever have been friends in the real world, not just as brothers.
Co-written with Schwartzman and Roman Coppola, Anderson’s fifth feature length film continues his legacy as one our times most innovative auteurs. Many might find it too similar to his other works, but there is a certain depth to this film that gives it a true distinction.
While certain moments in the story are more profound than any thing else we’ve seen from Anderson, he is still able to offset this with his perfectly timed and painfully ironic humor. The film is filled with memorable sequences, from petty bickering over the use of a belt at a Hindu temple to the constant consumption of Indian painkillers.
With his off centered shots, long range zoom-ins and the vibrant color palette used, The Darjeeling Limited has every aspect of an Anderson film you have come to expect, and more. And like his other films, there is enough depth and detail that it will only get better the more times you see it. |
