I drove an hour to watch this movie in an independent theater, and I am so glad I did. In my opinion, Wes Andersen's movies are bound together by dark humor, eccentric personalities, and a tender portrayal of the human spirit.

This movie continues the tradition, but it explores new territory. I read some headlines for other reviewers who are comparing this movie to previous work and not judging it independently. I think this is a unique film of itself, and it should be treated as such.

I strongly recommend watching the short film "Hotel Chevalier" with Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman. It contains some vital information to understand the plot and carry it on.

This film is art. I love Andersen's strange and odd settings... I'm not sure if we're in the 1960s, the 1970s or what. Music is from the 60's, fashions are from the 60's and 70's, but we have issues in the film when a character uses an obviously modern laptop computer. I really like this device he uses in his films.

I think Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman have a great chemistry together.

The point of this film, in my opinion, is similar to Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic. These people are in some deep, deep pain... Yet you manage to enjoy yourself with the humor littered throughout. It's almost as though his movies are portraits of particular characters... more like a painting. I like that quality.

Every character in this film and the others he has made I find endearing and while full of flaws, deeply human and just like me in many ways.

My favorite scene?

The boys sit down with their mom and don't speak. They just look at each other and smile. Sometimes, I think we all should try communicating that way.

Two thumbs up. This is on my favorite films ever list.
