Basic plot: Venkatesh is young working class Indian in Goa, who makes a living cleaning a hotel, and selling plastic bags in the street. He becomes fascinated with a pool in the backyard of a wealthy Indian, which he longs to swim in, but he never sees any one use it. He manages to get a job with the owner, working as a gardener. He becomes enamored with the owner's daughter. Their lives become intertwined as their personal histories are slowly revealed.
I just got back from spending a month in India (my first visit), and this movie does a fantastic job of capturing all the little details of life I saw there. It's "more real than a documentary". It moves slowly, but if you savor the details, it'll give you a window into their lives on a level that few movies can. The ending - which is perfect - will leave you thinking. I highly recommend this when you're in a thoughtful mood. |
