From the first moment in I was hooked. So much so that I wish I could see the rest of THE movie that was the first act, but then August in his directorial debut train wrecks in act II, and barely drives the wreck across the finish line. In the Q&A August admitted that act II was unscripted and unfortunately it showed.
I loved the overall theme and would have loved that movie as well. Ryan Reynolds gave a spectacular performance throughout, I thought maybe even award winning. McCarthy was good. Hope Davis is a wonderful actress, but totally mis-cast in this movie. Elle Fanning continues to astound and will pluck emotional notes from our soul for years to come.
August continues to demonstrate a command of the tricks of the trade with a great ability to entertain. With some polishing of his casting skills and the objectivity of someone else's script he is quite capable of a blockbuster. It appears that he was a little too close to the material and needed some objective feedback of either a co-director or a writer. |
