Unlike most people, I watched the movie on a whim and THEN read the reviews. I'm aghast at what the critics said about the movie--and I think the critic reviews reflect more about the sorry life of critics than this movie. Mick Lasalle of the SF Chronicle gives this movie a C with the comment "He's all about good times and following impulses, admitting what you want and going after it. Not everybody gets to live like that, but if a guy can, why shouldn't he?"--What?! The whole movie was about how all those physical things are empty and meaningless and one should contemplate how one should measure their life's worth; I suppose that concept is just way to spiritual for a San Francisco based movie critic.
What I really delighted in was the way Morgan Freeman's character handled the "heaven" concept without stepping on any religion's toes. Masterfully done in an era where (apparently) movie critic's hackles rise on the mere mention of morality. |
