The true horror of war

In a way its a classic battle of good and evil. When the Japanese army occupied Nanking a few westerners including a Nazi industrialist and an American nun tried to keep some of the population safe from the rape and murder that was happening across the city. They risked their own lives for people they didn't know, and even though they were remarkably successful the events they witnessed would haunt them for a lifetime.

The actions of the Japanese soldiers illustrate the maxim that all power corrupts. When you know you can commit any atrocity and get away with it, it doesn't take much to turn men into animals. It has happened in every war in history and the genocides in Rwanda and Yugoslavia are two recent examples, as is Abu Grahib. War is a cancer that is eating our society - both the victims and the victors - and the greatest task we face in the 21st century is to finally "study war no more"
