Enjoyable, light-hearted fun

My wife and I saw this movie last night, and we enjoyed it quite a lot. The hand-drawn opening credits immediately piqued our interest, but I must admit I was a bit let down by the first 15 minutes of the movie. Soon thereafter, though, both the acting and directing pick up and you begin to better relate to the main characters. There were some touching scenes (e.g., when Irene comes out of the restroom of the restaurant after prepping for an impromptu date with Jean), offset by a lot of fun scenes, primarily when Irene schools Jean in the ways of being a "kept man/woman." In all, well worth the price of admission. The lead male character, Gad Elmaleh, did a particularly good job. His ability to convey his feelings via his somewhat unusual eyes was striking. A good example is the 1 Euro for 10 seconds scene, although there are many others.
Sorry for the incoherent review. Just go see it. It's a cute, fun, enjoyable movie set in a beautiful locale (southern France/Nice). |
