What could have been great was just OK

I'm a sucker for a summer Will Smith movie but this is the third one in a row that left me scratching my head.
Hancock could be a really, really great movie if it didn't get so lost in the hype. The concept is great but there are huge, gaping holes in the storytelling. I think it was trying too hard to be funny when it could have been played straight with comedic undertones. I love Jason Bateman too and thought he and Smith worked well together but there could have been more to the movie.
I was also put off by all the swearing, it was just unneccessary. The acts of "heroics" were pretty entertaining but I just wanted to know more about these characters.
Save your money and see it at the matinee price or better yet, go see Wall-E or Wanted, those are wayyyyyyyyyyyy more compelling and interesting movies than this one. It does not live up to Smith's reputation. It is almost Wild Wild West, Redone - that's how lame it is. Great cast, great concept, just not done quite right. |
