I didn't read the book so I can't compare and I have never read any of Jane Austen's books but I have seen every film based on her books as it has come out...I didn't understand who the characters in the books were but I still loved the film. I don't think you need to be that familiar with who the characters are as the film guided you through it all by observing the modern day characters. I was happy to see two women involved with younger men and hope that trend in films continues. The film moved me and I especially was moved by Emily Blunt's portrayal of the French teacher who has never been to France and who falls in love with her student. The theme I saw overall was that women want to be understood and appreciated for their essence...And many men don't "get that" and pigeon hole women into "wife" "teacher" "mother" etc...There are parts of each woman that are unique and special ...that makes her heart sing...It is those parts that she wants to share with the man in her life...I didn't believe that the teacher's husband suddenly started reading books in bed with her either...But I have to say I think that type of thing would make many women feel seen and heard...because those are the hidden treasures and parts of her that would make her feel like she was visible and understood. And I think the man who wanted Maria Bello to read science fiction that moved him and changed his life felt the same way. We are more alike than different and this film had a lot to say about men and women and I loved it. |
