Another Romero zombie classic!

I saw Diary last night at a sneak preview and just had to write a review. In "Diary of the Dead" George Romero has once again created a classic of the zombie movie genre (which he invented of course) Filmed very successfully (take note JJ Abrams) as a collection of footage from film student's cameras, personal camcorders, camera phones and even swiped from surveillance cameras, Diary effectively mixes socially commentary with grueling apocalyptic mayhem to create a totally satisfying horror movie experience. There is plenty of gore including some very innovative zombie deaths and the makeup is top notch with CGI used sparingly to add to the artfulness of the shots, but not overwhelmingly as in "I Am Legend", taking away from the human element and scare factor. I was also happy to see that the concept of the intelligent zombie, i.e. "Land of the Dead", was abandoned for this film and we have returned to the gritty man against corpse formula like "Night of the Living Dead" or the original Dawn movie. Some of the characters were a bit wooden in the beginning but they developed nicely as soon as the poop hit the fan. All in all I highly recommend "Diary of the Dead" as a worthy addition to the Dead series and a film worth seeing in the theater. By the way if you see this, Samuel rocks! You'll see ;) |
