Last night,I went to see special screening at the Walter Reade Theatre of Romero's new Zombie film,DIARY OF THE DEAD and while I enjoyed it inmensly and consider this latest Romero film to be better than Romero's previous LAND OF THE DEAD & DAY OF THE DEAD,I really don't think this film is in the same league of the classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD & DAWN OF THE DEAD. One of the problems is that this film shot in mid 2007, was released by the Weinstein Company 3 weeks after CLOVERFIELD and unfortunately that film has stolen part of DIARY's theatrical potential, although in my opinion,DIARY is a much better film than CLOVERFIELD but that's the Weinsteins fault. Also Romero's message about the You Tube generation is a bit too obvious & heavyhanded compared with DAWN OF THE DEAD.But the film has some great Zombie shocks than only Romero can deliver and his fans won't be disapointed. |
