Everything that happens in the movie can be figured out within the first 10 minutes. However, if you stop there, you will miss the next 90 minutes of the main character wandering around his school and neighborhood where he occasionally breaks his stoic facial expression. There are the exciting, real-time closeups of the main character's face as he rides up an escalator. Imagine watching mediocre skateboarders move in slow motion (really! it's like slowing down the melting of butter).
I get the idea that the viewer is supposed to feel the questions in the head of the main character. It's interesting the first 6 times it happens in that it gives some of the feel of the book to the movie, but it became the crutch that the movie leans on. Wait until you see the part with two agonizing slo-mo sequences in a row.
This is a half-hour television program that was extended to 90 minutes with the use of gimmicks and the directors insistence on using every second of film shot. |
