Charecter Misalignment and Depressing

"Smart People" seemed to be oxymoronic given its title which is clearly the intent of the movie. The acting, though good, seemed to lack some of the key traits that make intelligent people interesting yet emotionally less-than. There was some deviation between the four main charecters personality but not by much. Even though this movie ressonated with me it felt the director missed some key attributes to make the actors really memorable or even likable. Like many have said, Smart People was a little depressing. The intellectual depression can be a clinical one but I would suggest it's due to a disconnectedness from society. The charecters seemed to even be disconnected from each other which seemed misaligned, a house full of strangers if you will. Intellectuals have their close friends and the charecters in the movie seemed to all be a weird sort of transients. The only believable relationship I saw in the movie was between the brothers. I really enjoyed Quaids brother, he had a sensibility about him that was believable as well as complex. The other actors were rather shallow and left no impression as where they were coming from as their moods or personalities swayed throughout the movie.
The movie had no real cinimatic awe to it nor creativity. It is simply a story of a few people with a dab of drama. Thomas shows some needed humor to this somewhat depressing movie. I felt the actors made the piece more than the plot. It's unfortuante that the true dichotomy that intellectuals face wasn't told. That is, a complex balance between the things that compel them and the reasons they are the only ones who find it interesting. |
