I was actually very pleased with this film. I honestly didn't know anything about it and didn't even know it was in French with english subtitles until it began.
While the overall length of the film could have been reduced by 15-20 minutes, the overall character arc and development was wonderful and I found myself very sympathetic to the main character, played perfectly by Francois Cluzet ann actor I've never heard of (he resembled Dustin Hoffman in some ways.).
His sister in law played by the very attractive Kristin Scott Thomas added an edge to the film but I felt she didn't evolve into a full-blown role that we all know she could, but in the end the film wasn't about her (I've become a bigger fan of hers after this movie).
Alex's life is twised upside down, 8 years after the murder of his wife and the story that follows is pretty intense and ultra-complex.
I imagine the scriptwriters going through gallons of whiteboard ink trying to keep it all straight.
in the end, the story is kept intriguing and the characters, all of them, very well played, including that of Margot's father and that of Phillipe's (Jean Rochefort who I need to catch as Don Quixote 'Lost In La Mancha'
So in the end, a few minor things but overall this movie is a B+ (almost an A-) and I highly recommend it.
(ps, don't know why I'm posting this (probably because I don't want to write a review for Dark Knight, but I had to say that I was honestly disappointed in it... not only in the movie itself but the immense hype and marketing that seems to have been so callously built upon the tragic and sad loss of Heath Ledger... who did deliver an amazing performance.) |
