curious pretentious piece of crap. ongoing joke about a guy telling Pitt’s character “Did I ever tell about the time I got struck by lightening?” First couple of times it’s sort of funny, after that it gets old. Fincher just seemed to randomly throw that in even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the story.
Also the constant switching back to present day with Cate Blanchett’s character as an old woman telling the story is annoying. The scenes set in the present day don't add anything to the story. Why not just tell that story from the past and be done with it? Maybe Fincher should have watched Fried Green Tomatoes, a film that effectively uses present day/flashback narrative to tell its story.
Another problem is that Blanchette’s character Daisy is an extremely unlikable, self-centered, shallow human being so it’s hard to conceive of how Benjamin could even fall in love with her. There is also no chemistry between Pitt and Blanchette.
I liked David Fincher’s previous films, Seven, Fight Club, but The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, is disappointing. The film never decides on what it wants to be. There are too many holes in the story and too many underdeveloped characters that are crammed into this long movie. It’s an overstuffed and ineffectual attempt at old-school movie charm, and another perfect example of how ass kissing movie critics can somehow fall in love with obvious, melodramatic hokum whenever it’s pretentious and well publicized. |
