Beautiful to look at but ultimately disappointing and lacking resonance. The story could have been epic on so many levels yet the director took the easy way out by making the film an hour too long and creating gorgeous visuals that manipulate the audience's emotions but do little to promote the plot.
Cate Blanchett is a wonderful actress but not a romantic lead and watching Brad Pitt get more beautiful in each scene as he anti-ages is a cheap shot to divert the viewer's attention from a frequently meandering story line.
I think this script would have been served better in the hands of more experienced director who would spend more energy with character development and plot. There were too many cheap shots meant to get a laugh or a tear. |
