Rob Zombie breathes new life into this tired old franchise with a new spin on this classic tale. Retelling the original story in a new
direction, Zombie creates almost a sense of remourse and pity for young Michael Myers... almost. It's clear that Zombie likes to cast his wife prominently, and recycle the same cast he's dragged with him through such un-memorable films as House of 10,000 corpses and the Devils' Rejects; in fact, it's almost distracting.
I thought Zombie's previous work felt forced, and created it's own "C" movie horror genre reflecting back to the grindhouse films of the early '70s, but Halloween 2007 feels more polished and well thought out. The camera work seems a bit too shaky at times, but the angles and color schemes are actually quite fitting to the overall tone of the picture. Michael is shrouded in mystery, and even in explaination he oozes uber-creepieness. He is built up almost as a WWE character.
You might think you've seen Halloween, but Zombie ignores what you think you know about the tale, and relishes in updating the story for a new generation of Michael Myers fans. Enticing the young male crowd, his music fans turned movie-goers, he shows a bounty of buxom blondes and their beautiful breasts, which seem almost thrown-in when the story would work just as well without the gratuitous nudity.
The first 5-10 minutes are awful; had it remained on this pace I might have left the theater. I stuck it out, and after a slow build, it finally delivers. It didn't get as intense as I would have liked, but once Halloween night rolls around then the action and suspense take off. In fact, it builds up so much speed, by the time it ends, I felt like it was too high and needed a bit more to bring us back down, as it seemed a bit abrupt, but overall I enjoyed the film. It clocks in around 2 hours, long for a horor film, but overall it was quite entertaining. |
